Most words and expressions in sign language are represented by signs that involve hand movements and facial expressions. But there are words or terms that do not have signs. Finger spelling involves writing out words or terms from the alphabet with various hand positions. Instead of writing the words on paper, you write them in the air.
The first step in learning how to fingerspell is to study the manual alphabet from A to Z using a printable sign language alphabet. The alphabet sign language is depicted by 26 hand positions. When you fingerspell, hold your arm in a relaxed position. Each alphabet should be signed using your dominant hand and your palm facing your listener at a slight angle.
A good rhythm is important in finger spelling. You need to sign every letter in a clear and distinct manner. Before you begin signing the next word, stop momentarily after signing the last letter without dropping your hands.
Lip movement or mouthing goes hand in hand with finger spelling. Say the words silently while you fingerspell them. Except when you’re interpreting for someone else, you don’t need to vocalize the words.
Finally, practice finger spelling alone in front of the mirror or with a partner so that you can check if you’re using the right hand signs and rhythm.
