Resume objectives are brief statements that tell employers what the applicants are seeking for their career. Objective statements are optional components of resumes. While your resume can do without the objective statement, it is nevertheless important in marketing yourself effectively to your target employers. You can include your objective statement on the cover letter of your resume or on the resume itself. Either way, your objective statement must give employers a good reason to hire you or to consider you for an interview.
The resume objective statement consists of three major components. The first component tells employers what you are doing or presenting them for their evaluation of your resume. The other component explains why you are sending your resume in the first place. What position or career direction would you like to take? Lastly, resume objectives state your expertise, skills, and achievements. This component is more suitable for a cover letter than the resume itself.
The format of your objective statement depends on where you put it. On a resume, the objective statement consists of one or two sentences and appears near the top of the page. On a cover letter, resume objectives are usually placed at the second paragraph.
When writing your objective statement, have your prospective employer’s job requirements in mind. Your objectives must convince the employer that you are fit for the job and your application is worth considering. If you succeed with writing a good objective statement, then chances are high that you will get hired.
