It can take you about one or two years to learn basic sign language and probably longer to master it. But do not be discouraged. You need to be patient as a learner of this non-verbal language. If you really want to be able to communicate properly and effectively using sign language, learning the basics is a good place to start.

Familiarize yourself with commonly used words and terms by consulting sign language dictionaries. Interactive and instructional DVDs can also help you learn sign language.

Practice everything that you have learned from studying basic sign language in front of a mirror. At first, it may feel odd and awkward, but you will get the hang of it with constant practice. And of course, the best way to practice your newly learned language is to interact with sign language users or interpreters.
