One important fact about sign language – it is not universal. A sign language used in one country may differ from another. Also, grammatical and syntax rules that govern sign language are different from spoken language. That is why sign language cannot be learned overnight. It can take you about one or two years to learn basic sign language and probably longer to master it. But do not be discouraged. You need to be patient as a learner of this non-verbal language. If you really want to be able to communicate properly and effectively using sign language, learning the basics is a good place to start.
Notice how deaf people interact with each other through sign language? They use lots of bodily gestures and facial expressions—these in fact are important aspects of sign language because without them, using sign language would send confusing messages. So when you teach yourself basic sign language, be conscious of how you use facial expressions and body movements.
To learn how to sign the alphabet and certain expressions, you can use charts, photos, or videos that are designed for newbie sign language learners. Be sure you understand what each sign means. Familiarize yourself with commonly used words and terms by consulting sign language dictionaries. Interactive and instructional DVDs can also help you learn sign language.
Practice everything that you have learned from studying basic sign language in front of a mirror. At first, it may feel odd and awkward, but you will get the hang of it with constant practice. And of course, the best way to practice your newly learned language is to interact with sign language users or interpreters.
